Dunedin Toy Library does not run in isolation. We are part of a wider network of community groups, and being connected to that network gives us a couple of things that are worth explaining.
Community Discussion
Community Discussion is where we talk things through and decide together, out in the open. Instead of decisions happening in a meeting that most members never hear about, the conversation happens somewhere everyone can see it and take part in it. That matters for a volunteer-run group like ours, where the people doing the work on a Saturday morning are not always the same people who show up to a committee meeting.
Community Self Funding
Community Self Funding is how a community pays for the things it wants itself, together, rather than waiting on someone else to fund it. For us that means having a way to put our own resources toward what we decide matters, as a group, rather than the whole thing depending on one or two people chasing grants.
Being connected to nearby communities matters because the same problems tend to come up in the next suburb, or the next town, before they come up for us. A toy library or a volunteer group somewhere else has often already worked through the same rostering headache, the same question about fees, or the same argument about storage space. If we can see what worked for them, we do not have to start from nothing every time.
