Dunedin Toy Library is run entirely by volunteers, mostly parents who use the library themselves. There is no paid staff, so everything from running the desk to keeping the toys in good repair depends on people giving a bit of their time.
We are always glad to hear from anyone keen to help, whether you are a member already or just someone in Dunedin who likes the idea of what we do.
What kinds of help we need
Some of the regular jobs volunteers do:
- Staffing the desk during our opening hours, helping families borrow and return toys
- Checking returned toys and games for missing pieces or damage
- Cleaning toys and doing small repairs
- Helping sort and organise the toy library space
- Sharing skills like sewing, fixing, or basic maintenance
- Helping out behind the scenes with things like rostering or admin
You do not need any special experience. If you can spare a couple of hours now and then, that is genuinely useful to us.
What a first step looks like
The easiest way to start is to come along during one of our opening times and say hello to whoever is on the desk. Let them know you are interested in volunteering and they can talk you through what is involved and what might suit you.
If you would rather get in touch before turning up, details for doing that will follow here.
We will also be adding a way for volunteers to see rosters and coordinate desk shifts online, so it is easier to see when help is needed.
